Traumatic amputations can occur in vehicle crashes

People who are involved in motor vehicle crashes can suffer significant injuries, depending on the severity and type of crash. One injury that might occur is a traumatic amputation, which occurs when a part of the body is severed from the rest of the body.

Traumatic amputations can be partial or complete. A partial amputation means that some soft tissues are still connected at the site of the injury. A complete injury means that part of the body is fully separated from the rest of the body.

Significant problems can occur

The most obvious problem that occurs with an amputation is the loss of the body part. In some cases, it can be reattached. If not, there might be a chance of having a prosthetic to replace the lost part.

There are some other issues that might occur with a traumatic amputation. Two of the most severe are shock and infection. These can both be mitigated with prompt and proper medical attention, but they’re still possible.

The person will likely need considerable rehabilitation, regardless of the type of amputation or the ability to have it reattached. This could be a lifelong undertaking that can be costly, especially after the expense of the medical attention that’s required immediately after the injury occurs.

Victims who suffer this catastrophic injury as the result of another individual’s negligence may opt to pursue a compensation claim. This can help to offset the financial damages that they had to deal with because of the crash. Working with an individual who’s familiar with these matters is often beneficial.
