Serious burns can occur in a motor vehicle crash

On Behalf of | Mar 27, 2025 | Car Accidents |

Motor vehicle crashes can lead to a host of injuries, some of which are catastrophic. One injury that can greatly affect a victim’s life is a fourth-degree burn. This is the most serious type of burn that a person can suffer.

Unlike less serious burns, a fourth-degree burn destroys all layers of skin. The damage also extends into the deeper structures, including the muscles, ligaments and tendons. These burns are common when a person is exposed to hot metal or to flames, both of which are possible in serious car crashes.

Treatment is often extensive

Less serious burns may require little to no medical attention. This isn’t the case with fourth-degree burns, which require emergency care and significant treatment. This may include surgeries, skin grafts and care at a dedicated burn center.

Even with proper treatment, extensive long-term effects are possible. Nerve damage can lead to significant pain and loss of mobility. In some cases, limb amputation may be necessary. These burns can also be life-threatening. If the victim survives, they can face disfigurement, which can be devastating, particularly if the burn is on the face or an area that’s not easy to cover.

Victims of serious burns that are the result of a car crash caused by a negligent driver may opt to pursue a claim for compensation. The time for taking action is limited by law, so victims must act swiftly. Seeking the assistance of someone familiar with these matters may be beneficial.
