Coping with an amputation after an accident

On Behalf of | May 12, 2022 | Catastrophic Injuries

Georgia residents can suffer catastrophic injuries after certain accidents. One of the most devastating injuries is an amputation. It can be psychologically difficult to deal with the aftermath.

What type of accidents can cause amputation injuries?

Certain types of accidents can cause catastrophic injuries such as amputations. Car accidents rank among the most common. However, there are other types of accidents that can lead to amputation. They include the following:

  • Other vehicle accidents involving motorcycles, bicycles, trucks or trains
  • Electrocution
  • Factory or warehouse accidents involving machinery
  • Agricultural accidents involving equipment
  • Construction accidents

What are the emotional and psychological effects of amputation?

Suffering an amputation injury can have serious effects on your emotional and psychological well-being. Losing a body part can be devastating. It affects the body and mind and the way you function. If you lose a limb to such a catastrophic injury, you may also have to deal with phantom pain, a sensation of pain in the limb that was lost.

Different people might react differently to an amputation injury. In most cases, children are better able to adapt to their situation but are more likely to suffer from social issues such as bullying or rejection from their peers. Adults might have more difficulty dealing with having to adapt to new ways to function after years of taking their normal abilities for granted.

Some of the most common effects of amputation include anxiety, depression, grief and post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. The reason behind the injury is a common reason for these effects. A serious accident is already traumatic enough, but it’s a constant reminder when the person is left with the loss of a limb.

If you have suffered amputation injuries due to the fault of another party, it’s your legal right to hold them financially accountable for your losses.
