How can truckers stay safe on the road?

On Behalf of | Jan 9, 2021 | Truck Accidents |

Truck accidents in Georgia can be catastrophic for everyone involved. For people in another car, it can mean severe injuries and the loss of their vehicle. For truck drivers, it can mean the loss of their livelihood. While passenger vehicles have seen advances in safety technology, commercial trucks are still lagging behind, forcing drivers to take on the bulk of the responsibility.

How can truckers avoid dangerous accidents?

When you’re behind the wheel of your big rig, experts recommend having a plan of escape at all times. This means watching your surroundings so you know how to get off the road or get out of a bad situation if you think that an accident is imminent. You should also be aware of your surroundings at all times. Since cars are so much smaller than commercial trucks, a car could show up in your blind spot when you’re least expecting it.

It’s also important to leave as much space around your vehicle as possible. Make sure there’s plenty of room between your truck and the vehicle in front of you. While you can’t control other drivers on the road, try to keep your distance from cars driving behind you and next to your vehicle. If you have plenty of space, you’ll be able to pull over or change lanes whenever you need to get out of the way.

You should also keep an eye out for any signs of trouble. If you see cars slowing down, coming to a stop or behaving erratically, that might signify that there’s an obstacle ahead. If you give yourself enough time to react, you can avoid accidents that might lead to personal injury lawsuits. Listen to the radio so you can stay up-to-date on the road and weather conditions.

Were you the victim of a truck accident?

While most truckers abide by safety regulations, some cut corners so they can make it to their destination on time. Since trucks are so large and powerful, people in passenger vehicles are usually the ones who end up paying the price. They might find it advisable to have legal representation when seeking compensation for their losses.
